Liberalism's Desecration Of Manhood
by Christopher G. Adamo
In one of the most profound ironies of recent times, actor Ed Harris has asserted that President Bush's pro-life stance renders him unfit to be called a man. At this year's thirty-year celebration of legalized abortion in America (an event so bizarre it gives cause to wonder whether the inventors of the electric chair ever held annual commemoratives), Harris told the assembled group of salivating feminists that George Bush does not fit “the definition of a man” and then followed with a profanity (as if the utterance of an obscenity might make Harris more of a man).
Such a baseless charge, coming as it does from an individual like Ed Harris, makes it tempting to do a “side by side” comparison of the President's life accomplishments against those of the actor. For example, George W. Bush's duty as a jet fighter pilot, along with his competent ownership and management of a major sports team, stand in stark contrast to Harris who, at best, can only pretend such things in front of the cameras. However, while such an argument is easy to make, it sidesteps a bigger issue. More important than the mindless ranting of yet another Hollywood leftist is the reality of what liberalism in general, and abortion in particular have done to the standing of men and women in America.
With the advent of Roe v. Wade in 1973, women were told that their freedom of “choice”, and therefore the available options in their lives, would blossom. And it was assumed that such emancipation from the shackles of traditional marriage and child bearing would redound to them with enhanced esteem, purpose, and satisfaction in life. Yet, reality paints a very different, and much more demeaning picture of modern womanhood. For although abortion has indeed provided a means of eliminating the physical burdens of an unplanned child, the emotional hardship of that life, and especially of its being brutally torn from the woman, can never be erased. And no amount of liberal platitudes will ever successfully do so.
Furthermore, abortion completely undermines the almost instinctive inclination of men to protect women and children from harm. Instead of a man owning up to his misdeeds, he is tempted to consider the situation from the standpoint of absolving himself as easily as possible from any responsibility. Thus, abortion is the best thing to ever happen to men who regard women as nothing more than sexual playboys. And it necessarily follows that the vast majority of women having abortions are not doing so as a matter of “choice”, but because they are being coerced into undergoing the procedure by a callous and irresponsible man, who will then be free to exploit other women in the same manner.
Perhaps the best example in recent years of a pro-abortion “man” and his true regard for women was former President Bill Clinton. Many feminist organizations seemed to be totally baffled by the fact that Clinton was supposedly so adamantly “pro-woman” (read: pro-abortion), and yet had such a track record of abusive and degrading personal behavior towards women. But in reality, absolutely no inconsistency existed between the two principles. In all fairness it must be admitted that Bill Clinton held women in such esteem that he even believed they had a rightful place in honored institutions like the Oval Office. But it does not follow that his ravenously pro-abortion stance suggests that women were ever anything more significant to him, either in public or with regards to his “personal life.”
Support for abortion pleased his morally bankrupt female associates, thus making them more compliant to his ulterior motives. And if one or more of them should happen to conceive an unwanted child as a result of his actions (as has been rumored to be the case on multiple occasions), the situation could be easily and inexpensively “corrected” to his general liking, with the woman alone bearing all of the emotional and possibly physical scars.
So this is what Ed Harris calls a “man.” This is the manner of behavior and respect with which men are supposed to uplift and exalt women. Considering the widespread acceptance of this mindset (one struggles to call it “thinking”), it is no wonder that, in the last thirty years, incidences of spousal abuse by men, as well as the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents (again by men), have skyrocketed. Welcome to Ed Harris' “Brave New World.”

Growing up during the turbulent decades of the ‘60's and ‘70's, Christopher Adamo saw, to his dismay, the nation's moral foundations being destroyed before his very eyes. But even then he was a staunch Conservative at heart, and rejected outright the tenets of America's counterculture revolution.
After a hitch in the Air Force, where he specialized in airborne electro- optical systems, he pursued a career in the field of aerospace, working for major defense contractors in California, Florida, and Colorado. But his career plans abruptly changed during the industry-wide downsizing that followed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
Presently he is working in the field of industrial instrumentation in the state of Wyoming. Concurrently, he has become involved in that state's political process, attending state GOP conventions as a delegate, and serving as a member of the Wyoming Republican Central Committee. He has also aided in the candidacies of local legislators and state senators, as well as a U.S. Senator and Congresswoman.
From 1993 to 1996, he edited and wrote for “The Wyoming Christian”, the state newsletter for Christian Coalition of Wyoming. During that period, he developed an acute awareness of the harm being done to Conservatism by liberal activists within the Republican Party as well as the Democrats. This remains a favorite theme of his articles, which now appear as a regular feature on GOPUSA. |
